Truth be told, Chuunibyou Demo Koi Gai Shitai! was the very first Anime I ever watched as it was airing. Looking back over an old Facebook account I was absolutely gushing over it right up until the very last episode where I suddenly soured on the series. You see, at the time it was airing I had just separated from the Brony fandom entirely and could only think of the shame of all the times I committed social suicide when looking back. I was outraged that the series ended with Rikka continuing to be a chuunibyou because I saw that as encouraging her social ineptitude. You might say I was a bit like Yuuta in my fear of that behaviour. Eventually I became open to the idea that my reading of Chuunibyou’s messages was a bit lacking, and when that thought got mixed with a nostalgic desire to look back on the series just half an hour or so ago I went through my folders and found the first episode as soon as I could, and boy am I glad I gave Chuunibyou another chance.
Bristles Babbles #25: Koufuku Graffiti Episode 1 Brief Review
So, I figured I should be more active and talk about them Japanese cartoons more on here. Brief episode reviews is a good place to start, though I’m really awful at keeping up with these shows and tend to just cluster up my backlog with each new season. Koufuku Graffiti is the first show I watched this season, though it would’ve been Rolling Girls had I been in the mood after powering through 58 episodes of Hunter x Hunter over the course of about a week (which I may talk about soon). To be perfectly honest I wasn’t quite as in love with Koufuku Graffiti as I thought I would be.

Bristles Babbles #24: Big Hero 6 Review (2014) (SPOILERS)
I’ve been to the cinemas twice now to go see ‘Big Hero 6’. It certainly pales in comparison to the aforementioned 11 times I saw ‘Wreck-it Ralph’ in cinemas as I mentioned in my last post, and doesn’t quite measure up to the 3 times I saw ‘Frozen’, but it’s a good sign for any movie when I’m willing to see it more than once. Right off the bat I’ll say that it wasn’t as compelling for me as either of Disney’s previous animated releases. I don’t hesitate when I say that it’s a great movie though. Big Hero 6, in a lot of ways, is more a product of this current age of western animation than any major Disney releases these past few years, however in some ways it turns out not to be quite the product of the current age that it perhaps intends to be.

Bristles Babbles # 23: Feast Review (2014) (SPOILERS)
As you would know if you’ve been to see a Disney animated feature in cinemas recently you always get a charming little short before the actual movie starts. They’re often insubstantial, but they’re always feel good experiences. ‘Big Hero 6’ is no different, presenting you with a short simply titled ‘Feast’. Of the Disney shorts I’ve seen, including most recently the 11 times I saw ‘Paperman’ the 11 times I saw ‘Wreck-it Ralph’ in cinemas (at least 6 of which were regrettable purely because of all the money I spent on the movie, on cinema food and on my wonderful Vanellope plush that I won after numerous tries at the cinema’s claw machine) and ‘Get A Horse’ from before ‘Frozen’, Feast would have to be my absolute favourite.

Bristles Babbles #22: The Simpsons Season 1 Review (1989-1990) (SPOILERS)
To say that The Simpsons needs no introduction is an overwhelming understatement. The Simpsons are such a massive cultural icon, even with the not so great state of its current product, that you take it for granted. It only occurred to me a couple months ago that I had watched so many Simpsons reruns since the age of 4 or 5 that I probably recognise every last episode from the first dozen seasons. Since recently rewatching the brilliant ‘Homer’s Enemy’ from Season 8 (you know, the Frank Grimes episode) and since seeing Foldable Human’s fantastic video on the progression of Homer Simpson as a character, I’ve started to put the value of The Simpsons’ fantastic earlier seasons into perspective, and what better way to start than by going back to the very beginning.

Bristle’s Babbles #21: What’s The Deal With Scores?
If you’re on MAL or Hummingbird or AniList frequently, chances are you’re pretty accustomed to ratings, particularly scores out of 5 or 10 or 100. I rate most of my Anime and so do most frequent users of those sites, but just how much meaning do those scores really have? I would honestly have to say not much. Scoring is always based on arbitrary personal standards, no one person rates the same and no personal way of rating has any legitimate inherent value. Does a 10/10 mean an Anime is perfect in your opinion or that it’s simply a favourite of yours? Does a 5/10 mean you thought a series was average or does a 7/10 mean you thought a series was average? There’s just so many different meanings each score can take. Continue reading “Bristle’s Babbles #21: What’s The Deal With Scores?”
Bristle’s Babbles #17 – My Little Pony Equestria Girls: Rainbow Rocks (2014) SPOILER REVIEW
So here we are again with the second installment in the My Little Pony Equestria Girls franchise. I went into this a different person to the person Iwas when I saw the first film. I was just barely 6 months from cutting off my rocky relationship with the Brony fandom almost entirely, and coupled with the slightly underwhelming feeling I had watching the third season of the series first time around I was at my nadir of enthusiasm for MLP: FiM. I went in with the expectation of a mediocre to average experience and had a mediocre to average experience. Though I was excited to see the franchise get its own movie, it wasn’t quite the way I wanted it to be. Though fairly enjoyable all in all, it was much more a sidestep than a step up, and even managed to pale in comparison to the series’ two parters in terms of ambition.
